Antique, Art and Estate Appraisals in Los Angeles

There are two different things people mean when they ask what something is worth, and the difference matters before you spend anything.

A formal written appraisal is a document. It is prepared to a professional standard for a specific purpose, usually an insurance policy, an estate filing, a charitable donation or a division of assets, and it is written so that an insurer, an attorney or a tax authority will accept it. It is a paid service.

An auction estimate is our opinion of what an item would bring at sale. It is a range, not a document, and it is free.

Most people who contact us need the second one. If you need the first, we are accredited members of the International Society of Appraisers and our appraisals are prepared in compliance with USPAP, the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.

Hughes has been appraising and selling property in Los Angeles since 1978.

What we appraise

When you need a formal written appraisal

USPAP compliant written appraisal report prepared by Hughes

Insurance. Replacement value, so a policy covers what an item would actually cost to replace rather than what it cost when it was bought. Insurers generally want this in writing and updated periodically.

Estate and date of death valuation. Fair market value as of a specific date, for estate administration, tax filings and distribution among heirs. Executors and trustees are usually working to a deadline and need something the court and the accountant will both accept.

Charitable donation. Fair market value supporting a tax deduction. Donation appraisals have their own requirements, so tell us at the start that the appraisal is for a donation.

Equitable distribution. An objective, defensible set of values when property is being divided, whether in a divorce or among beneficiaries who need a neutral number rather than a family argument.

Hughes is not a law firm and not a tax advisor. We provide the valuation. How it is used, and what is required in your particular matter, is a question for your attorney, your accountant or the court, and requirements vary by county and by situation.

Free auction estimate, or paid formal appraisal

Use this to work out which one you need.

Choose the free auction estimate if you are deciding whether to sell, you want to know roughly what something would bring, you are weighing an offer someone has made you, or you are trying to work out whether an estate is worth a sale or a cleanout. It costs nothing, and it is usually the honest answer to "is this worth anything".

Choose the formal written appraisal if a third party needs the number. An insurer, the IRS, a probate court, an attorney or an opposing party in a division of assets. If someone other than you has to accept the figure, you need the document.

If you go on to sell the appraised property through Hughes, we rebate the appraisal fee.

How to get an antique appraised

  1. Send photographs. Use the form on this page. Clear overall shots, plus close ups of any signature, maker's mark, label, stamp or damage. Marks and labels are where most of the answer lives.
  2. Tell us what you know. Where it came from, how long it has been in the family, any receipts, letters or prior appraisals. Provenance is not a nice extra. It is often the difference in value.
  3. We come back to you. For most enquiries that is a free auction estimate. If the item or the purpose calls for a formal appraisal we will say so and quote for it.
  4. On site if needed. Whole estates, large collections and heavy furniture are appraised in the home. We work across Los Angeles and Southern California.

Why people use Hughes

International Society of Appraisers accredited member
  • USPAP compliant work from accredited members of the International Society of Appraisers.
  • We also sell. An appraiser who runs auctions every month is pricing against what things are actually bringing right now, not against a database. That is a real difference in a market that moves.
  • Since 1978, in the same part of Los Angeles. We know what a Pasadena Craftsman tends to hold and what a Beverly Hills estate tends to hold, because we have emptied a lot of both.
  • Straight answers. If something is not worth appraising, we will tell you that rather than sell you a document you do not need.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an appraisal cost?

It depends on the scope, because appraising one painting and appraising a whole house are different jobs. Contact us with what you have and we will quote it. Auction estimates are free, and appraisal fees are rebated if you sell the property through us.

Can you tell me what my antique is worth from a photo?

Often, yes, at least as a range. Photographs of marks, signatures and labels make that far more reliable. Some categories need to be handled in person before anyone should give you a number.

Do you appraise antique furniture?

Yes, and it is one of the categories we are asked about most. Period, vintage and designer furniture, single pieces or whole houses.

I need a value as of the date someone died. Can you do that?

Yes. Date of death valuations for estate administration are a standard part of our appraisal work. Tell us the date and the purpose at the start, because it changes how the appraisal is written.

Are appraisers licensed in California?

California licenses real estate appraisers. It does not license personal property appraisers in the same way, which is why professional accreditation matters. Ask any appraiser you are considering whether they are accredited and whether their work is USPAP compliant.

Do I have to sell through you if you appraise something?

No. The appraisal is yours. The fee rebate is there if you do choose to sell with us, not as a condition.
